Ducati Desmosedici GP 11 is the Motor bike used in Moto GP by Ducati team.It is a factory bike in Moto GP.The fatory bikes are manufactured with highest level of attention combined with best possible materials are used for construction and Ducati is no different from the others in terms of engineering the GP 11.The Desmosedici Moto GP bike has the state of the art technology. Here we bring a complete review of the Desmosedici GP 11 Moto GP bike.
In 2011 season ducati has two riders Valentino Rossi from Italy and Nicky Haydenfrom USA.The bike with yellow colored 46 numerical’s was used by Rossi in the 2011 season and the 69 number by Nicky Hayden.Ducati in the past has also manufactured a road legal replica of the Desmosedici back in 2008 the bike was named Desmosedici RR with a limited production run of 1500 bikes the bike was based on Desmosedici GP 6.In 2007 season Moto GP has started using 800 cc displacement bikes until 2011 GP 11 is the bike used by Ducati in 2011 and in 2012 they have switched back to 1000 cc the new 2012 Desmosedici is the GP 12.
Ducati has a reputation of producing good looking and elegant road going sports bikes. The GP 11 though it is a Moto GP bike is no exception from this. The bike looks stunning and has a feel of muscle. The front has an air intake and followed sponsor stickers on the left and right hand side of the air intake. The bike as a Moto GP bike has only a single seat and exhaust gases are released through the under seat exhaust. The front is aerodynamic with small windshield. The Magnesium alloy wheels and tyres are black in color and the body is in Ducati Rosso GP red color which resembles the Ferrari Red color. The total body work in Carbon-fibre to reduce the overall weight of the bike. The bike as a Moto GP bike does not have side stand or horn or headlights. The overall dry weight of the bike is 150 kilograms. The less dry weight is not only achieved by the body but also in the advancements in the technology of engine, gear box and other etc.
The engine is liquid cooled four stroke V-4.V-4 means four cylinders are present and the bike is liquid cooled because at high temperature air required for cooling the engine is not sufficient so in high power and high speed vehicles liquid cooling is used. Each cylinder has four titanium valves. The valves are controlled by Desmodromic DOHC (Double Over Head Cam shafts).Desmodromic means it is a special DOHC system used in the Desmosedici for valve timing and control. The displacement of the engine is 799 cc and the maximum power output of the bike is in excess of 200 hp.The lubricant used in Shell advanced Ultra 4.Ignition type used in Magneti Marelli.Shell raing V-power is used as fuel for the bike. The final drive is high quality D.I.D chain. The gear ratios are a secret. The bike can reach a top speed in exess of 310 Kilo meters per hour.
Transmission and Carburation:
Six-speed cassette-type gearbox, with alternative gear ratios available to be altered before the beginning of the race based on the results of practice sessions. Dry multi plate slipper clutch ensures smoother and quick shifting of gears.D.I.D Chain final drive.
Italian after market exhaust manufacturer Termogini is the official race partner for Ducati in manufacturing exhausts for Ducati race bikes.Termogini has produced the best exhaust systems for the Ducati race bikes. And this bike also gets its exhaust from Termogini. The exhaust note sound in decibels is upto 102 db.
The chassis was the only thing that made the GP 11 an unsuccessful bike. The bike has a Carbon-Fibre tubular chassis to reduce the weight of the bike. But that has caused many problems for the Ducati riders in the 2011 season and the chassis offered no front end support to the rider and Ducati has said that the Chassis will be replaced by a new alternative in the 2012 season Desmosedici GP 12.
In Moto GP most bikes use Ohins Fork and this bike also employs Ohlins forks in the front and rear. But finding the perfect combination of front and rear forks is the difficult thing. And the bikes suspension is good enough to the other Moto GP bikes. The front is Öhlins upside-down 48mm front forks and Öhlins rear shock absorber, adjustable for preload, compression and rebound damping. These forks are specially made for Racing purposes and may fee harsh if used on road.
Tyres and Brakes:
There is a single tyre rue in Moto GP and the official tyre manufacturer for Moto GP is bridgestone. The Gp 11 uses 16.5 ” Bridgestone tyres on front and rear.
For a bike which an travel in excess of 310 kilo meters per hour braking is crucial for making turns when over taking other riders. The brakes used in Moto GP are from Brembo and the Gp 11 has Brembo, two 320mm carbon front discs with four-piston calipers at the front . Single stainless steel rear disc with two-piston calipers at the rear. The Carbon Fibre disc brakes require high temperature to perform to its potential. If the rae was declared as a dry race then the front brakes would be fitted with stainless steel brakes as carbon fibre brakes require high temperature which is not possible in wet races.
