Moto GP – Basics

Moto GP is a 1000 cc Proto type bike racing.Although from 2007  to 2011 Moto GP was meant for 800 cc bikes.But in 2012 according to the new  Moto GP rules by FIM the governing body of Grand Prix Motorcycle racing the bikes switched back to 1000 cc.It is a part of  Grand Prix Motorcycle racing.Grand Prix motorcycle racing.Grand Prix motor cycle racing also consists two to other divisions called Moto 2 for 600 cc and Moto 3 for 250 cc from 2012.

Governing Bodies:

FIM– Federation Internationale de Motorcyclisme.It was founded in 1949 and its headquarter is located in mies,Switzerland.It is the governing body for 103 national federations in six continental unions.

IRTA-International Road-Racing Teams Association.It was formed in 1986 and every team competing in Moto GP have to join IRTA.It is the association of all Grand Prix racing teams.

Dorna-It is the commercial rights holder for Moto GP.Moto 2 and Moto 3.


The MSMA (Motorcycle Sports Manufacturers’ Association) takes care of the interests of all the constructors involved in motorcycle racing.

Grand Prix Commission

Meanwhile, the Grand Prix Commission, composed of Messrs. Carmelo Ezpeleta (Dorna, Chairman), Claude Danis (FIM), Hervé Poncharal (IRTA) and Takanao Tsubouchi (MSMA), has the authority to make changes to the Road Racing World Championship Grand Prix Regulations (the rules of MotoGP).

Grand Prix Safety Commission

It was formed on 2003 by Grand Prix commission following the tragic death of Daijiro Kato in april 2003.Now the present committe members are  MotoGP riders Valentino Rossi (Ducati), Casey Stoner (Honda) and Dani Pedrosa (Honda), in addition to Claude Danis (FIM Safety officer), Franco Uncini (Head of the IRTA Safety Commission), Javier Alonso and Carmelo Ezpeleta ( Dorna).
